How can I use Internet Marketing? - Part 1

This is a question we get a lot.  Let’s first look at some statistics.  Research shows that people spend almost as much time on the Internet as they do watching TV.  However, advertising spend for the Internet is one third of that spent on TV.  Internet is still a new channel to some and thus the marketing budgets are still playing catch up.  So in essence the amount of your marketing budget for the Internet should be roughly the same as that of TV.

Moms total nearly 83 million in the United States and make up one of the most powerful consumer groups.  Moms control 85% of the household spending according to a recent survey by Mintel International Group.  Today’s mom handles more information and tasks than anyone else.  The electronic age has helped mom get more done.  Moms were early adopters to the Internet and have been early to the social and mobile areas as well.

Moms are buying more than just household products.  They control 65% of all computer and technology purchases and 75% of all car-buying decisions and more than 7 million moms are running business out of their home.

What is Internet Marketing?

The term Internet Marketing is used synonymously with Interactive Marketing, Digital Marketing, Web Marketing and Online Marketing as well as the advertising variations like Internet Advertising, Interactive Advertising, Digital Advertising, Web Advertising and Online Advertising.

First let’s tackle the difference between Marketing and Advertising.  The simple answer is that Marketing includes Advertising but not visa versa.  Marketing includes everything from acquiring the customer to maintaining the customer.  Advertising focuses on making customers aware of a product or service.  So we can summarize that Internet Marketing

Internet Marketing - $6.4 Billion in Q3

17% increase from same period last year

It’s a new record but one that will soon be broken.  The U.S. Internet advertising revenues topped $6.4 billion in the third quarter of this year, representing a 17% increase from the same period in 2009. This data comes from the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) and PwC US.

The Internet has made a significant impact on our lives.  It influences everything we do from entertainment to purchases to communicating with our friends and family.  Companies have embraced digital media because it allows them to reduce their advertising waste, it provides measurements, it allows them to segment their creative as well as provide results on what’s working and what’s not.

Ontarget is a marketing agency not an advertising agency. Advertising is part of what we do but marketing includes much more than just advertising. Marketing includes sales leads, product development, customer service, sales promotion and much more.
